$323 million Stolen from the Ethereum Protocol
February 4, 2022
Looking at a series of Etherscan transactions, it is clear that the hackers exploited Wormhole, a bridge between the two blockchains Ethereum and Solana, and stole 323 million dollars in Ethereum.
Wormhole is the very dynamically densed protocol that helps transfer assets over various protocols across the blockchain. The bridge deals with locking assets and creating a wrapper version of the funds in the destination chain, while the client transfers accents from one chain to another.
So far, it is not known how the attacker circumvented the firewall, but this is what led to the theft of almost 325 million dollars in current prices. Etherscan transaction records give a description of the theft of 93,000 using Ethereum. This DeFi protocol exploit is now considered the largest.
Wormhole reported shutting the platform for what's called maintenance as they try to find the perpetrators and will provide updates via their Twitter account. It was later said that the platform was used for 120 1 wETH. The platform itself has made a public statement that it will be adding additional Ethereum over the next few hours to ensure that wETH is maintained at a ratio of 1:1.
"We are working to get the network back up and running quickly," Twitter said.
An address that is directly related to the Wormhole activity sent a message across the chain in which there was an interesting offer. The hacker offered to look for breaches, for disclosing which he pretended he should be paid 10 million dollars.
